Embarking on a journey into woodworking without formal training or an apprenticeship might seem daunting, but it's a path I've navigated with the help of modern resources. Through books and a plethora of YouTube videos, I've gained insights and skills that have allowed me to develop my craft. In this post, I want to express my gratitude to a few creators who have significantly influenced my woodworking journey.
Steve Ramsey: Woodworking for Mere Mortals
Steve Ramsey, the host of Woodworking for Mere Mortals, was my first guide into the world of woodworking. His ability to break down complex concepts into easy-to-understand instructions made the craft accessible to a novice like myself. Steve's videos instilled in me the confidence that experience is not a prerequisite for creating beautiful works of wood.
Jonathan Katz-Moses: The King of the Dovetail
Jonathan Katz-Moses, founder of Katz Moses Tools, has helped me develop a deep appreciation for joinery. Known as the "King of the Dovetail Joint," Jonathan's expertise shines through in his tutorials. His videos have taught me not only the intricacies of joinery but also practical skills like sharpening chisels. I even purchased his dovetail jig, which has become an indispensable tool in my workshop.
Tamar: 3x3 Custom
Tamar, the creative force behind 3x3 Custom, offers a unique perspective in her woodworking videos. Despite her modest claims, she is an expert in my eyes. Her approach often provides innovative solutions for projects, and I find her content both engaging and inspiring. Her journey into woodworking started by accident, which perhaps contributes to her distinctive style.
Jason Hibbs: Bourbon Moth Woodworking
Jason Hibbs, from the Bourbon Moth YouTube channel, combines education with entertainment. His videos are not only informative but also infused with humor, making them enjoyable to watch. Jason’s creativity is unparalleled, and his content is a must-watch for anyone with even a passing interest in woodworking.
David Picciuto: Make Something
David Picciuto is someone I can relate to, given his background in the software industry. Through his Make Something channel, David has produced countless videos that have been instrumental in my learning process. One standout project was his design for a jig to make box joints with a router, which I have replicated and frequently use in my own projects.
Michael Alm: Picture Frames and Beyond
Lastly, I'd like to mention Michael Alm, whose content has been a significant part of my learning journey. His videos on building picture frames and a spline jig were particularly impactful early on. Michael's ability to explain complex techniques in a straightforward manner has helped me improve my skills and broaden my woodworking repertoire.
These creators have provided me with invaluable knowledge and inspiration. I owe much of my progress in woodworking to their generosity in sharing their expertise. There are many more I could mention, and perhaps I will in a future post. For now, these individuals hold a special place in my journey as a self-taught woodworker.
